Andrew Carnegie made millions of dollars in the steel industry.

“That must be why so many things were made of steel,” I said.

The Brooklyn Bridge

“Yes, “he said. “That was the U.S. steel boom. Let’s walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and I’ll show you some more uses for steel.”

“Yippie! Let’s go!” Ben said, running ahead of us. We walked to the top of the bridge for a great view of the Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty.

“What do you think those are?” Scott asked, pointing to the cables holding up the bridge.

“Really thick ropes,” I answered.

“They’re steel wires twisted together,” he explained. “The bridge’s designer, John Roebling, wove steel wires together to make strong steel cables. The cables allow the bridge to span the river. This was the first suspension bridge to use steel cables. It was also the longest suspension bridge in the world when it was completed in 1883. Why do you think this bridge was important to New Yorkers?”

“Because it connected the island of Manhattan to most of New York,” I said.
